Natural Reserve of Sierra y Cañones de Guara
At the present time this Natural Reserve spreads over almost 47.450 hectares and the peripheral protected area within its surroundings encompasses another 33.775, thus constituting a wide stretch of land between the Somontano of Huesca and Barbastro, and the foothills of the Pyrenees. The ecological value of the Natural Reserve of Sierra y Cañones de Guara is beyond any doubt, and its protection was intensified since it attained such protected status in 1990, as the high number of visitors it attracts could endanger many spots of interest. This value lies mainly in its impressive karstic landscape, as these mountains are traversed by four main rivers: the Flumen, the Guatizalema, the Alcanadre and the Vero, all of which leave peculiar geological formations in their wake, such as dolines, caves, pits and spectacular canyons which are well suited to the practice of canyoning. These canyons are the most well known feature of the Sierra de Guara, but there are others, such as the abundance of Mediterranean forests alternating with grazing lands, in particular in the surroundings of the Reserve’s highest chasm, the Tozal de Guara which is 2.077 deep, and certain redoubts of Atlantic forest. And to this it must be added that Sierra de Guara is one of the most protected areas of Europe due to its status as a reserve of rock-dwelling birds. The municipal areas spanned by the Reserve are: Abiego, Adahuesca, Aínsa-Sobrarbe, Alquézar, Arguis, Bárcabo, Bierge, Boltaña, Caldearenas, Casbas de Huesca, Colungo, Huesca, Loporzano, Nueno and Sabiñanigo.. © Prames Information:
