The festivity of “Mojiganga” is held on the Sunday closest to 14th September in the town of Graus. Its origins appear to be in the beginning of the 18th century, following the war of succession, when Bourbon troops invaded Graus, imposing a tax on the town. This situation continued until the town was recaptured by Philip of Anjou’s troops. A group of people dressed in satirical costume travel through the town streets to the main square. In the square, the local people perform a satirical play about social life, whose colourful characters include the king, the old woman and the witch.
The performance has two parts. One is the king and queen’s procession, in which they are accompanied by 22 couples who dance to the sound of bagpipes from Graus. The other is a satire which has a critical and humorous content about local life.
