Legends / The Legend of Monte Perdido

All mountains of a certain height have a legend but some, like Monte Perdido (the lost mountain), have several. Its shape and symbolism have for centuries inspired the inhabitants in the nearby Sobrarbe area.

Monte Perdido, the third highest mountain (3.355m) in the Pyrenean range is the setting for various legends. Perhaps the most beautiful of these is the one that tells of a magic palace existing on the peak.

This marvellous palace was built at the beginning of time by the mythical Enchanter of the Peaks, Atland, who put a spell on the palace so that only certain people could enter it. Polished walls and towers protected it and hid behind them vast gardens and meadows that were like an earthly paradise. The palace is still bound by Atland’s spell and can only be entered if you are riding on the back of a flying horse.

The beauty of this legend is far removed from reality. You have only to climb the mountain to see for yourself. The legend does, however, add charm to the ascent.
